Editions

The Mermaid web part comes in several editions: Windows PowerShell Installer, SPFx editions for SharePoint Online and 2019/SE modern pages, a sandboxed solution for classic pages and a PowerShell script that can install both the classic and the modern web part. All are included in the subscription, and you may use and combine the packages as you like.

Installer

The easiest way to add the Mermaid web part to modern as well as classic SharePoint pages is to run the file Install-MermaidWebPart.ps1 in Windows PowerShell. It opens an installer where you can select edition. For SharePoint Online, this method can also be used on macOS.

SPFx Extension

The SPFx edition comes as a SPPKG file and gives a client-side extension that is very easy to manage via the tenant's app catalog. It adds a Mermaid web part to modern SharePoint pages. The SPFx extension comes in two variants: for SharePoint Online and SharePoint 2019/Subscription Edition.

Sandboxed Solution

Sometimes you hear that Microsoft has deprecated sandboxed solutions, but that is not true. What has been deprecated is custom code in sandboxed solutions, but the kalmstrom.com SharePoint solutions do not contain such code. Instead our products build on no-code sandboxed solutions, which Microsoft will continue to support.

The Sandboxed solution comes as a WSP file that adds a the Mermaid web part to classic SharePoint pages.

PowerShell Script

The Install-MermaidWebPart.ps1 file can be used in a script editor for modern as well as classic SharePoint pages in both Online and On-Premises SharePoint.

Changes that must be made for each organization are explained in the script, but you should still have some experience of PowerShell to use this installation method.

Evaluator Information

The recommended way to test the Mermaid web part is to use a new site and create new pages for testing.

Once the testing is completed, you should start over by installing the Mermaid web part in production sites. It is however also possible to continue using the same installation or use an existing site and page for the evaluation.

When the Mermaid web part has been installed in a site, all users with at least Edit permission can create and update Mermaid diagrams.
