Create a Content Type

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconWith a content type, you can make sure a SharePoint library is managed in a consistent way and gives the correct and desired metadata. In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows how to create such a content type for a Quotes library. Welcome to use it as a starting point and modify it to suit your own organization.

To create a content type for the whole tenant you need to use the Content Type Hub. For this you need to have full permission over the whole SharePoint tenancy.

In this demo Peter keeps it simple and shows how to create a content type for a site collection. When you create it in the root site of the site collection, it can be used in all subsites.

Peter creates a content type which inherits from the parent Document and has four extra columns.

Create a content type for a Quotes document library

  1. On the top level site in the site collection, open the Site Settings.
  2. Click on 'Site content types' in the Web Designer Galleries group.
  3. Click on the Create link to create a new content type.
  4. Give the content type a name.
  5. Select parent content type to base the new content type on.
  6. Put the content type in an existing or new content type group.
  7. Click OK.
Peter continues with creating new columns to the content type: Quote Date, Decision Date, Value and Decision. He adds them all in the same new site column group.

In the next article we will explain how to make a library use this content type.
