Activate the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconSharePoint Online has various featues that are not enabled by default when the root site in the site collection is a team site. One of them is the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure. When it has been activated, several new features become available in the site collection. Some of them are immediately obvious, while others are visible only through the links on the Site Settings page or in galleries or libraries. In the next eight articles we will have a look at some features that require activation of the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure.

In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explains how to activate the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure for the site collection. Peter also shows how this gives you more navigation options to choose from.

Activate the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure for a site collection

  1. Click on the settings gear and select Site settings.
  2. In the Site Collection Administration group, click on the link 'Site collection features'.
  3. Scroll down to SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure and click on the Activate button.

The activation of the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure takes a few minutes, but after that you can see that the Look and Feel group in the Site Settings has become different. Instead of the links to the Quick Launch and the Top link bar, there will be one Navigation link. It opens a page with more options than before, for example to open a link in a new window and to select audience for the link. We will have a closer look at these options in the next few demos.

Another benefit of enabling the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure are that you can use the Content Query web part. This web part searches the site collection or specified sites and not the index, so it is suitable for content that is often changed.

When you have activated the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure for a site collection, you can also activate the SharePoint Server Publishing feature for a site within that site collection, which gives you more powerful layout options.
