Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Editions

Generally the two SharePoint editions of Kanban Task Manager have the same features. The differences depend on how SharePoint sandboxed solutions and add-ins behave and are not unique for our products.

For SharePoint 2010 users there is no other option than the Sandboxed Solution, but organizations with later versions or Office 365 SharePoint can choose whichever edition they prefer. We will continue to update both editions.

Details

The most detailed descriptions of the Kanban Task Manager SharePoint editions are given in the manuals, but these are the important differences:

Sandboxed Solution

  • The Kanban Task Manager Sandboxed Solution .wsp file is downloaded from the kalmstrom.com website and uploaded to the root site of a site collection. When the file has been activated in the root site, it is available for all sites in the site collection. It has to be activated on each site where it should be used.
  • The Kanban Task Manager Sandboxed Solution supports SharePoint 2010 and above, both on-premise and SharePoint Online.
  • The features "Move tasks to another kanban board" and "Show tasks from multiple installations in My Tasks" are only possible with the Sandboxed Solution. Add-ins don't have permission to access other sites.
  • "My Tasks" can only be embedded in a modern SharePoint Online page if you are using the Sandboxed Solution.
  • The Kanban Task Manager Sandboxed Solution supports attachments, videos and inline images in the task description field.
  • The site where Kanban Task Manager Sandboxed Solution has been activated can be saved as a site template. Just note that when you restore the site template on a newly created site collection, upload the Kanban Task Manager for SharePoint .wsp file too (along with the site template .wsp file).
  • You don't have to be a site collection administrator to install the sandboxed solution, but it is required for Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in.
  • Supports all SharePoint groups, including SharePoint groups, Office 365 and Security groups.
  • The Sandboxed Solution can only be installed in a classic team site, not in a SharePoint Online modern site.

Add-in

  • The add-in architecture creates another SharePoint site to contain the app, what is called the "app web". The communication between the "host web" and the "app web" is constrained by the way the SharePoint API works as well as by browser security limitations. Therefore, the add-in gives less possibilities compared to the sandboxed solution.
  • Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in is installed with the "add an app" command. The .app file can be downloaded either from the SharePoint Store or from the kalmstrom.com website. If the file is published to the Add-in/App Catalog, it will be available to the whole farm or tenant under "Apps You Can Add".
  • Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in supports SharePoint 2013 and above, both on-premise and SharePoint Online.
  • Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in may be inserted as an App Part on any classic page in the site where the Add-in is installed and configured.

The App Part supports attachments, videos and inline images in the task description field, but attachments, videos and inline images are NOT supported in the Add-in. To use these, first configure the Add-in and then insert Kanban Task Manager as an app part in a page.
  • Due to permission limitations in SharePoint add-ins, Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in does not support moving tasks between kanban boards, and the "My Tasks" embedding in the add-in can only show tasks from the current site.
  • "My Tasks" can only be embedded in a classic SharePoint page.
  • SharePoint sites with add-ins cannot be saved as site templates, so this is not possible with Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in.
  • You have to be a site collection administrator to install Kanban Task Manager SharePoint Add-in. However, you can install the sandboxed solution with full control permission over the SharePoint site.
  • Supports only SharePoint permission groups.
  • Can be used with SharePoint Online modern team sites.
