Create virtual machines in Azure

A SharePoint 2016 trial tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconSharePoint 2016 will not be released until the spring 2016, but the preview version has been published. In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows how to use Microsoft Azure to create new virtual machines for a SharePoint 2016 trial.

Peter creates a virtual network and three virtual machines from the Azure Gallery for his SharePoint 2016 trial: a Domain Controller, an SQL server and a SharePoint server.

VM creation process

Peter first creates a virtual network, and once that is created he can add virtual machines to it.
  1. Open the Office 365 admin center.

  2. Click on the Azure AD link at the bottom of the left panel to open the Manage Azure website.

  3. Click on the  NEW button.

  4. For the virtual network, click on NETWORK SERVICE >VIRTUAL NETWORK >QUICK CREATE.

  5. Give a name to the network.

  6. Select a location.


  8. When the virtual network has been created, click on the NEW button to create the Domain Controller VM.


  10. Choose an image. (Peter chooses Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.)

  11. Configure the virtual machine.

  12. Select COMPUTE >VIRTUAL MACHINE >FROM GALLERY to create the SOL Server VM.

  13. Search for the 2016 version of SQL Server and select it.

  14. Configure the virtual machine.

  15. Select COMPUTE >VIRTUAL MACHINE >FROM GALLERY to create the SharePoint Server VM.

  16. Click on SharePoint in the left panel.

  17. Configure the virtual machine.

Peter's next step is to add the virtual machines to the Remote Desktop Connection Manager.
