Phone Messages Enterprise Solution, Custom Refiners

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint Search Center Refiner In this last article on how to build an application for automated phone messages in SharePoint, we will look at the Refinement web part in the Phone Messages search vertical page.

The Search Center has no Quick Launch to the left. Instead there is a Refinement web part that allows users to filter search results by certain criteria.

Among the most commonly used refiners are Author, Modified and Object Type. The image to the left shows the default refiners.

The Refinement web part can be customized, and in the demo below Peter Kalmstrom, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows how to customize the Refinement web part for the Phone Messages search vertical he created in an earlier demo.

Peter adds his managed metadata column for department as a new refiner, and he also removes some refiners that are not interesting for phone messages searches.

Customize the search vertical Refinement web part

  1. Open the search vertical page.
  2. Click on the Settings gear and select Edit page.
  3. Edit the Refinement web part.
  4. Click on the 'Choose Refiner' button.
  5. Add and/or Remove refiners in the dialog.

For the managed metadata Department column Peter selects 'owstaxidmetadataalltagsinfo'. It can be difficult to find the right refiner, but samples are shown below in the dialog so you can easily select different options and see the results.

You can also change their order of the refiners. Click Apply and then Publish the page when you are finished.
