When you drag or upload files to SharePoint document libraries as described in some earlier articles, metadata is not always kept. In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explains how file metadata can be transferred to SharePoint.
NOTE: This no longer works in SharePoint Online. The article will be removed as soon as the book SharePoint Online from Scratch has been updated. The book has a link to this article, and by keeping it for now we can reach all book readers with the new information.
Title and file names are always kept, but unfortunately permissions and modified date are always lost.
Keywords are transferred to SharePoint if the library has a Keywords or Enterprise Keywords column. We generally recommend you to use a library where the Enterprise Keywords feature is enabled. Enterprise Keywords are centrally stored and can be re-used in other libraries or lists in the same tenant. If you use standard keywords they are only valid for that list or library.
Also other metadata can be kept if there is a column already created for it.
The only way to include metadata like Date modified and Permissions when migrating or copying files into SharePoint is to use code. This is of course something that the kalmstrom.com team can assist you with, if needed!
