3 SharePoint Online Site Collections

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconA SharePoint site collection is just what it sounds like: a collection of sites. SharePoint Online have various kinds of site collections, but the most common one is the classic team site. Two other site collections can by default be created by all users: the modern team site and the communication site.

In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows how to create these three SharePoint Online site collections and explains the difference between them.

Create from the SharePoint homepage

When you click on the SharePoint tile in the Office 365 app launcher, you will be directed to the SharePoint Online homepage. From this page, users can create two modern site collections.

These site collections will be displayed on the creator's SharePoint homepage, but they do not show up in the SharePoint Admin center.
  • The team site
Use the team site option when you want to collaborate on content. An Office 365 group will be created automatically when you create the team site, and all users added to the site will be members of that group.
  • The communication site
Use the communication site option when you want to share content. No Office 365 group will be created, so use the ‘Share site’ icon in the top right corner to invite people to the site.

Create from the SharePoint Admin center

The most feature rich site collections are created in the SharePoint Admin Center. This is what we call the classic site collections, and Peter shows the classic team site in the demo below.
