Content Types, Introduction

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconThe best way to make sure that a SharePoint document library will contain the desired content and be managed in a consistent way, is to use a content type – a reusable collection of metadata that describes the shared attributes and behaviors for a specific kind of content. Such content types can be defined for any item type, including documents, list items, media files, and folders.

The image shows a document created in a library connected to a Quotes content type. This content type uses a Word template with a table where metadata can be easily selected. When you create a new document in this library, the metadata columns will be visible. When you print the finished document they will also be included.

In the following demos Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, will explain how a content type can be used with a Quotes library. He first creates a new content type, and connects it to a SharePoint document library. Then he creates a Word template (with the table shown in the image above) and adds it to the content type. Finally he creates a template of the library with the dedicated content type and shows how to use it in another site in the same site collection.
