Connect a Content Type to a Library

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconIn the previous tutorial Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, showed how to create a Quote content type.

Now it is time to add that content type to a new document library and remove the default content type. When that is done, all new documents in the library will be based on the content type he added, which means that they will have fields for certain metadata.

Add a content type to a document library

  1. In the document library, open the Library Settings.
  2. Click on 'Advanced settings' in the General Settings group.
  3. Select the Yes option under 'Allow management of content types', and click OK. This gives a new Content Type group in the settings.
  4. Under the new Content Type group, click on 'Add from existing content types'.
  5. Select the content type you want to use for this library.
  6. Click Add and then OK.
Now the content type has been  added to the library, and users can start creating documents of this type. However, the default Document content type is still there and gives a possibility to create other kind of documents in the library too. Peter removes this default content type from the library, and he also goes into the advanced settings and makes the New folder command unavailable.

In next article we will create a document template!
